Mark Thatcher - Answers questions in court

The British businessman, Sir Mark Thatcher, has appeared in a South African court to answer questions about his role in an alleged coup plot in Equatorial Guinea.

Sir Mark, 51, who is the son of the former British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, was given a fine and a suspended sentence last month after he admitted breaking anti-mercenary laws by agreeing to finance a helicopter.

However, he said he did not know it was to be used in the alleged plot.

As part of his plea bargain, he agreed to return to court today to answer 43 mostly procedural questions about the plot that were submitted by Equatorial Guinea. Equatorial Guinea believes there was significant British involvement in the alleged coup.
