Lyons family would welcome Garda apology

The family of Dean Lyons, who was wrongfully charged in connection with the murders of two women in Dublin in 1997, has said it will welcome a public apology that is expected from the Gardaí.

The 24-year-old was held in custody for nine months after making a confession relating to the horrific murders of Sylvia Shields and Mary Callinan at the their home in Grangegorman in north Dublin.

Both women had suffered multiple stab wounds by an attacker who broke into their home.

The sister of Sylvia Shields has welcomed the news. Stella Nolan said there was an urgent need for a full public enquiry into the garda handling of the case.

Her solicitor Michael Finucane has tonight written to the Justice Minister stating that Ms Nolan is entitled to no less satisfaction than the Lyons family, and that a full enquiry should be established without delay.
