A Vatican spokesman has said Pope John Paul II is expected to spend another week in hospital in Rome, where he is recovering from an acute respiratory infection.
Medical tests on the Pope were said to have given satisfactory results.
Today the Vatican released its second health bulletin on the Pope since he was rushed to hospital on Tuesday night with breathing difficulties.
The following is the text of the statement:
'The Holy Father's general condition and respiratory condition are evolving positively. The acute laryngotracheitis is in a phase of regression and there have been no more episodes of laryngospasm, which was the reason for his urgent hospitalisation. The Holy Father passed a peaceful night of rest and tomorrow, Friday at 12pm, a new bulletin will be issued.'
Spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the 84-year-old is well rested after visiting him at Rome's Gemelli Hospital this morning.
Yesterday the Pope, who has Parkinson's Disease, participated in Mass with his aides from his hospital bed.
