At least 175 people are now reported to have died in a fire at a nightclub in the Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires. 375 others were injured.

Reports say the fire appeared to have been caused by a type of flare that is used in Latin America for New Year celebrations.

Local media said up to 6,000 people may have been in the club in the centre of the capital when the blaze broke out.

Witnesses said one of the flares was fired into the club's ceiling, which was covered with foam.

There was then a stampede and many people fainted from inhaling smoke.
