Omagh bombing - Special branch officer to be questioned

There have been fresh calls for a public inquiry into the Omagh bombing, after reports that an RUC special branch detective is to be questioned as part of the continuing police investigation into the 1998 Omagh bomb atrocity.

The officer is suspected of having made an anonymous telephone call which warned of a planned attack in the town.

The call was made 11 days before the bombing, but the information was never passed to police on the ground.

29 people died in the Omagh bombing, which was carried out by the Real IRA.
