The number of journalists killed worldwide this year is the highest it has been in a decade, according to a report released in New York.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has reported 54 deaths so far this year, the majority of them due to the Iraq war and killings in the Philippines.

The committee's executive director, Ann Cooper, described the toll as shocking and unacceptable.

Among those killed this year was BBC cameraman Simon Cumbers.

The 36-year-old from Navan, Co Meath was shot while on duty in Saudi Arabia.

The deadliest year recorded by the committee was in 1994 when 66 reporters were killed, mostly in Algeria, Rwanda and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
