A panel of three judges in Milan has retired to decide its verdict in the bribery trial of the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

A judgment is not expected before tomorrow afternoon.

Mr Berlusconi is accused of bribing judges during the late 1980s and early 1990s to win favourable rulings for his Fininvest business empire.

State prosecutors have demanded a prison term and called for Mr Berlusconi to be barred from public office for life.

The Italian Prime Minister has denied the charges.
