Police in the Netherlands have said a 62-year-old Dutchman who was arrested this morning will be charged with assisting the ousted Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein.

It is alleged that Frans van Anraat supplied Mr Hussein's regime with ingredients for chemical weapons used in the 1988 gassing of the Kurdish city of Halabja.

Mr van Anraat is accused of being aware of the purpose of the chemicals.

It is believed he was arrested in Amsterdam on Monday, although details have only been released.
