FG claims unfair treatment of fishermen

Fine Gael says Irish fishermen are being treated unfairly by the courts where they face fines that are 11 times heavier than those handed out in other EU countries for fishing offences.

The Party's Spokesman on the Marine, John Perry, told RTÉ that there should be equality of treatment.

Inshore fishermen have been complaining that the Navy is being far more rigorous in checking their boats since the Garda investigation began into the alleged illegal fishing activities in Killybegs.

However, this has been denied by the Navy, which says it is carrying out routine patrols and will follow-up any breach of the fishing regulations.
