Yasser Arafat - Buried in Ramallah

Yasser Arafat's remains were buried at his Muqataa compound in Ramallah in the West Bank earlier today. They had earlier arrived by helicopter from El Arish, in Sinai, on the final leg of their journey from Paris.

Palestinian security forces in Ramallah were overwhelmed by thousands of mourners who gathered for the burial.

The Palestinian authorities had imposed a security clampdown around Ramallah while Israel sealed off the West Bank.

But thousands of mourners broke through the cordons in the West Bank town before the helicopter arrived, and surrounded the aircraft immediately on touchdown.

Nine people have been reported wounded, one critically, by gunshots fired into the air. Hundreds of mourners were also treated by medics after fainting in the crush or falling off walls.

A number of people were hurt when a wooden structure at the compound where he is buried collapsed under their weight.

Plans to let the Palestinian leader's body lie in state were scrapped due to the chaos.

Funeral begins in Cairo

Mr Arafat's funeral began this morning in Cairo when the coffin was brought to a mosque for funeral prayers during a ceremony attended by foreign dignitaries but closed to the public.

The ceremony was attended by Heads of State and dignitaries from more than 60 countries. Ireland was represented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern.

Following the ceremony, the late President's coffin was carried in a formal procession to the Almaza military airbase in Cairo where an Egyptian aircraft was waiting to carry it to El Arish in Sinai.

Candle-lit vigils were held in villages across the West Bank overnight with mourners displaying portraits of Mr Arafat.

A Book of Condolence for Mr Arafat will be opened at the Mansion House in Dublin for three days beginning tomorrow at 10.30am.
