Parents worried about Internet usage

Internet - Concerns over child access
Internet - Concerns over child access

Almost half of Irish parents feel that the Internet poses a possible threat to their children and are worried about them accessing unsuitable material.

However, research carried out by the Internet Advisory Board found that the level of supervision of children in Ireland is very high.

The research shows that almost 90% of parents say they have imposed rules on their child's use of technology, while eight out of ten children say there is usually someone present when they access the net.

But almost 50% of the parents surveyed said they were concerned about the risk of their children accessing pornography and other unsuitable material. 28% were worried about the risk posed by digital TV.

However, the Internet Advisory Board also found that parents are less aware of other developments. These include the use of some mobile phones and games consoles to access the Internet.
