The chair of the Catholic Church's disbanded working group on child protection has said it had not recommended that all child protection matters should be decided by child professionals rather than Bishops and religious superiors.
However, Maureen Lynott told RTÉ News the church could not have transparent procedures unless its child professionals are made responsible for reporting allegations to police and health authorities.
She was responding to Bishop John McAreavey's statement last night that it would be strange if a Bishop was responsible for everything in a diocese except child protection.
