A senior garda who was severely criticised in the Morris Tribunal report on corruption in the force in Donegal has been dismissed from the Garda Síochána by the Government.
The Cabinet took the decision to sack Garda Superintendent Kevin Lennon at its meeting yesterday.
The interim report of the Morris Tribunal said two gardaí, Supt Lennon and Detective Garda Noel McMahon, had orchestrated hoax explosives finds in the years leading up to the 1994 IRA ceasefire to further their careers.
Detective McMahon resigned from the Garda Síochána in July.
The announcement that Supt Lennon was dismissed from the force was only made today, after he was informed.
In total, the Morris report criticised 17 serving and former gardaí for obstructing the tribunal, lying, and for negligence in their duties.
The report by the former High Court President, Mr Justice Frederick Morris, also led to the resignation of two senior gardaí.
Supt Lennon has also failed in efforts to have his legal costs paid by the State, or by the tribunal.
