Offaly man challenges PIAB policy

A Co Offaly man has begun a legal challenge to the policy of the Personal Injuries Assessment Board to deal directly with clients rather than through their solicitors.

Declan O'Brien of Esker Meadow, Tullamore, was given leave by the High Court today to seek a number of orders and declarations against the board.

He claims his constitutional right to be represented by a solicitor is being breached by the actions of the Board.

This is the first challenge to the workings of the PIAB.

A lawyer representing the board indicated that the PIAB was anxious that the case would be heard as soon as possible as it has implications for other cases.
