About 40 people, thought to be North Koreans, have stormed the Canadian embassy in Beijing in an apparent attempt to gain asylum.
It is understood the group used home-made ladders to scale the embassy's three metre walls and duvets to protect themselves from spikes.
China treats North Koreans as illegal immigrants and deports them, but in recent years increasing numbers have entered foreign embassies, hoping to secure passage to South Korea.
