West Cork - Mother and daughter drown
West Cork - Mother and daughter drown

A mother and daughter have died after the car they were travelling in plunged into a heavily flooded river near Bantry in West Cork this afternoon.

The accident happened as the car was travelling along a mountain road between Bantry and Kilgarvan.

It was washed away as they attempted to cross a tributary of the river Coomhola close to their home.

The woman managed to get her six-year-old son to safety and he raised the alarm. He is said to be 'shocked and traumatised' but safe.

The young girl, when found this evening down stream, was rushed to Bantry hospital but died a short time later.

Her mother's body was found not long after entangled in debris.

A garda spokesperson said heavy overnight rain had caused serious flooding in the area and the river had been turned into a 'raging torrent'.
