Contempt proceedings against Evening Herald

The Director of Public Prosecutions has been given leave to bring contempt proceedings against the Evening Herald over its coverage of an assault on a librarian in Grafton Street.

Counsel for the DPP told the High Court that the Evening Herald published CCTV photographs of the incident after two men were charged and that the description in the article of what occurred was inaccurate.

22-year-old Stephen Nugent from Swords and 27-year-old Dermot Cooper from Stillorgan are awaiting trial charged with causing serious harm to Brian Duggan from Sligo in April 2003.

Today, Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan granted leave for contempt proceedings and adjourned the case until 11 October.
