Court bid to jail Conroy over deportations

Noel Conroy - Deportation case

The High Court is considering an application to jail the Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy over the late-night deportation of seven Nigerians.

The seven Nigerians, including one family, were sent on a midnight charter flight last April even though their lawyers had High Court proceedings against their deportation.

The Nigerians’ lawyers claim that gardaí confiscated their clients’ mobile phones and threw away faxes notifying them of court proceedings.

The High Court has reserved the judgement on whether to jail Mr Conroy for failing to return the Nigerians after a late-night court order.

Counsel for the State has argued that this order had been overtaken by events as the Nigerians’ flight had already left Dublin Airport.

The case was adjourned today until next Thursday to allow time for the State to present its case.
