The body recovered from Lough Ree this afternoon has been identified as that of 71-year-old Walter Borner.
Mr Borner had been missing since a boating accident on the lake last Sunday.
The body was brought to shore by the gardaí and members of the Athlone sub-aqua club and was taken to Mullingar General Hospital for a post mortem.
The body was found floating in the water by a passing cruiser near Nun's Island at 12.30pm today.
