President McAleese laid a wreath during ceremonies held for the National Day of Commemoration in Dublin today.

The miltary and religious ceremonies were held in the grounds of The Royal Hospital, Kilmainham.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, and other members of the Government attended, as did members of the Oireachtas, the Council of State, the Diplomatic Corps and the public.

The day commemorates all Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.

The date is the nearest Sunday to the anniversary of the signing of the 1921 Truce on 11 July.
