A man who raced his car against another car on the M50, resulting in the deaths of three people, has been sentenced to two years in prison.
21-year-old Ernest Gore from Dingle Road, Cabra in Dublin had pleaded guilty at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to reckless endangerment on 11 March 2001.
Gore was involved in a race with 27-year-old Robert Fitzsimmons, who lost control of his car and crossed the motorway hitting a car being driven by a 35-year-old priest, Fr David Boylan.
Mr Fitzsimmons and his passenger, 19-year-old Jason Nugent, were killed instantly and Fr Boylan died later in hospital.
Gore had no previous convictions but has since been convicted of driving without insurance twice in incidents that predated this accident.
Judge Desmond Hogan said that while there were mitigating factors, such as his young age and expression of remorse, if he balanced these against the aggravating factors a custodial sentence had to imposed.
Judge Hogan also disqualified Gore from driving for ten years.
