Lawyers for nine terrorist suspects held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba have launched a legal challenge against their detention in a US federal court.

The petitions demand that the US government justify their imprisonment.

They are the first legal challenges since the US Supreme Court ruled on Monday that nearly 600 detainees held in Guantanamo have the right to contest their captivity in an American court.

Hundreds more are expected to follow.
