The international space probe Cassini-Huygens has returned the first close-up images of Saturn's rings.
The probe successfully entered into orbit around the planet early today to begin a four-year study of the planet and its 31 known moons.
The spacecraft travelled through the planet's rings early this morning after a journey of more than two billion miles. The journey took more than six years.
It completed the delicate manoeuvre within one second of the schedule set for it by scientists before its launch.
The mission is a joint American-European project.
