The chief international envoy to Bosnia has sacked 60 Bosnian Serb officials for failing to arrest the fugitive war crimes suspect and former Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic.

Paddy Ashdown has far-reaching powers under the Dayton Peace Accords that ended Bosnia's war.

Other measures introduced included financial penalties on the Serbian Democrats.

Mr Ashdown said he wanted to punish the small band of corrupt politicians that had been protecting war criminals and hindering Bosnia's attempts to join NATO and the European Union.

Mr Karadzic, who has been charged with genocide during in the 1992-1995 Bosnian war, has been on the run for eight years.
