The head of the Garda Press Office has said he was shocked to learn that RTÉ Radio was going to name John Carthy during the Abbeylara siege.

Superintendent John Farrelly was speaking at the Barr Tribunal into the 2000 siege during which Mr Carthy was shot by gardaí.

Supt Farrelly said that he protested when he heard Mr Carthy named shortly before he was due to go on air for the Five Seven Live programme.

The garda said he had asked RTÉ's Crime Correspondent Paul Reynolds not to name Mr Carthy.

In an earlier statement, Mr Reynolds said he had no recollection of such a request.
