Congolese troops regain control of town

Congolese government troops have retaken control of Bukavu from dissident soldiers without a fight.

According to reports, the rebel leader, Colonel Jules Mutebutsi, and his men have fled.

A UN spokesman told reports, ‘Mutebutsi's soldiers have run away as the government troops are moving back in. People are playing drums. Mutebutsi is no where to be seen.’

Mutebutsi and his 300 fighters were one of two groups of renegade soldiers who took control of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo town last Wednesday.

The insurgency sparked fears of a wider regional war and threatened Congo's efforts to restore central administration after five years of war.
