In recent days UN peacekeepers in Congo have acted to quell fighting within the town of Bukavu between the Congolese army and a former rebel commander Colonel Jules Mutebutsi.

However, Congolese army sources say additional soldiers loyal to Colonel Mutebutsi are now advancing on Bukavu from the North.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Congo has confirmed that a column of up to 1,000 troops have arrived some 40km from the town and that the Congolese army is engaged in an exchange of light and heavy weapons fire.

The fighting is taking place close to where UN troops have dug in at the town's strategically vital airport and the UN's position lies in the way of any further rebel advance.
