FPA in North appealing abortion ruling

A pro-choice campaign group in the North is making fresh attempts to try to win greater access to abortion for women in Northern Ireland.

The Family Planning Association is making a submission before the High Court in Belfast appealing the outcome of a judicial review delivered last year on the provision of abortion services in the province.

The association is seeking a ruling that would force the Department of Health in Belfast to issue guidelines to doctors on exactly when an abortion can be carried out.

Termination in the North is only legal when the mother's life is in danger or there is serious threat to her mental or physical wellbeing.

The FPA claims about 40,000 women have been forced to travel abroad from the North over the past 20 years for an abortion, paying around £1,000 each to private clinics.

It claims it has produced evidence of certain women being refused abortions where there had been legally justifiable grounds.

The High Court proceedings are due to last up to three days.
