Gardaí have confirmed reports from the Prison Service that a man who was found dead in his cell at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin this morning appears to have died of natural causes.
Last night, the 34-year-old Co Westmeath man began a five-day sentence for being drunk and disorderly.
He was placed in a cell with another inmate and his body was discovered just after 8am this morning when prison officers opened cells for breakfast.
A Prison Service spokesman said the prisoner had an existing medical condition that may have been a factor in his death.
He was seen by nursing staff on his admission and was due to undergo a medical examination today.
