Six arrested in major anti-drugs operation

Gardaí in Dublin have arrested six people as part of an international anti-drugs operation, and have seized a large haul of chemicals used in the manufacture of ecstasy and amphetamines.

The four men and two women from China and Afghanistan are believed to have been involved in bringing the chemicals into Ireland for shipment to the Netherlands.

Gardaí, Dutch police and customs officers from both countries had been investigating a major international drugs operation for months.

It led to a raid at a warehouse in the Greenmount Industrial Estate in Walkinstown when the chemicals were seized.

They were also discovered in Holland and had the potential to make ecstasy tablets with a street value of €500 million and amphetamine worth over €30 million.

Smaller quantities of the chemicals were also seized in searches at a number of other locations. They came in through Dublin Port on Tuesday labelled as vegetable oil.

Those arrested are in their 30s and 40s and are being questioned at Clondalkin and Tallaght Garda Stations.
