A court in Libya has sentenced six foreigners to death for spreading HIV through the use of infected blood products.

Judicial sources have confirmed that five Bulgarian health workers and a Palestinian doctor, who were arrested five years ago, have been sentenced to death by firing squad.

They were accused of infecting some 400 children with the virus that causes AIDS.

The Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, said they had taken orders from the CIA and the Israeli secret service, Mossad.

The Bulgarian government has called the decision 'unacceptable' and says the sentences will be appealed.
