The UN Security Council has voted unanimously to approve a United Nations peacekeeping and police force for Haiti.
The resolution authorises the deployment of up to 6,700 troops and more than 1,600 police and follows recommendations from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
However, Mr Anan's request for a two-year mandate was substituted with a commitment for six months beginning in June.
A small force of foreign troops is currently in Haiti trying to keep order after a rebellion ousted former president, Jean Bertrand Aristide in February.
