Silvio Berlusconi - Corruption trial resumes

The corruption trial of the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has resumed in Milan.

Mr Berlusconi is accused of trying to bribe judges to influence a business deal in the 1980s, before he entered politics.

It is alleged that Mr Berlusconi, who is Italy's richest man, tried to scupper the takeover of a state-owned food group by a rival firm.

He has protested his innocence, but the charges are regarded as the most serious he has faced in nearly ten years of investigations.

The trial had been blocked in June 2003 after the Italian parliament passed government-backed legislation granting Mr Berlusconi and government office holders immunity from prosecution.

However, in January, the Constitutional Court in Italy ruled that the law violated the country's constitution.
