Cardinal Desmond Connell has once again asked forgiveness from those who have suffered abuse by Catholic priests.
In his Holy Thursday homily, Cardinal Connell said he hoped the steps now taken would ensure that the future would see no repetition of what happened in the past.
Cardinal Connell said he dared to hope that later on a more complete account of the efforts made to do what was required would prove helpful to all.
The Archbishop added that when he himself was criticised he was unable to respond because he had already given his record to an independent inquiry.
Cardinal Connell made the comments as he celebrated the Chrism Mass at Dublin's Pro-Cathedral for what he said was his last time as Archbishop of Dublin.
