Spain brings in army to guard rail line

Spain has sent in the army to guard its railways after a bomb was discovered on a high-speed line between Madrid and Seville.

The Interior Minister Angel Acebes told a news conference that police would also check the Madrid-Seville rail line on which the explosives were found, kilometre by kilometre.

There is growing evidence that Islamic terrorism was behind the attempted bombing which it is believed was targeted at a train packed with Easter holidaymakers.

The bomb, believed to contain between 10 and 12kgs of explosives, was found in a bag under the rails. The explosives were connected by a cable to a detonator.

A railway employee spotted the bag and alerted authorities who sent explosives experts to the scene.

Services on the prestigious AVE train linking Madrid and the southern city of Seville were halted while all the track was checked. The incident disrupted travel as millions of Spaniards prepared to leave cities for the Easter week holidays.
