A jury at the Central Criminal Court has heard how a man accused of the murder of a 49-year-old homeless man allegedly struck his victim several times in the head with an axe.

Mark Allingham, 24, of Father Murphy Place, Midleton, Co Cork, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Gerard Hackett in October 2002.

The prosecution told the court today that blood on the clothing of Mr Allingham was the same as the DNA found on Mr Hackett.
