The Masters of two of Dublin's main maternity hospitals have said that they did not ask the Minister for Justice to change the law or hold a referendum on the right to automatic citizenship for children born in Ireland.
Michael McDowell announced earlier this week that the Government planned to hold a referendum this summer on the question of automatic citizenship.
Following the announcement, the minister said the Masters of the Maternity Hospitals had pleaded with him to do something to change the law.
But in a statement issued last night, Dr Sean Daly of Coombe Women’s Hospital and Dr Michael Geary of the Rotunda said they had given no opinion as to what the Government should do about the issue of citizenship.
