Zimbabwe has said that 64 foreigners being held on suspicion of being mercenaries could face the death penalty.

The men were taken into custody on Sunday following the seizure of an American-registered cargo plane which the Zimbabwean government said was carrying military material.

It is reported that the suspects are mainly South Africans, Angolans and Namibians.

Another man - a Briton reported to be a former member of the SAS who was at the airport to meet the men - was also arrested.
