8 dead, 60 hurt in Jerusalem bomb

A suicide bomb attack on a bus in west Jerusalem has killed at least eight people and wounded at least 60.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades have claimed that Mohammed Zuhul, aged 20, from Hussan village near Bethelehem in the southern West Bank, carried out the explosive attack.

A spokesman for the Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, said at least 60 people were injured in the blast on a packed number 14 bus near the King David Hotel.

In a statement the Palestinian leadership, including Yasser Arafat, alleged the attack was deliberately committed to harm the Palestinian case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

The ICJ is to discuss the legality of the so-called security fence built by Israel which at points juts into Palestinian territory.

Today, Israel began tearing down an 8km section of the barrier that encloses the Palestinian town of Baka al-Sharkiya.

But Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said after today's explosion that such attacks justified its construction.
