White House condemns Israel bombs

The White House has said the Palestinian Authority must take action against terrorism, condemning 'in the strongest terms' today's attacks.

Four people were killed and twelve injured in two suicide attacks by Palestinian bombers in Israel and the West Bank.

In the first attack, an explosion in a shopping centre in the town of Rosh Ha'ayin, killed one person and injured at least ten others.

The bomber was also killed in the blast.

Shortly afterwards, another suicide bomber blew himself up among a group of Israeli soldiers at a bus stop outside the Jewish settlement of Ariel, in the West Bank. One Israeli was killed and two were injured.

Hamas claimed responsibility in a statement for that attack, and named the bomber as Islam Iqteshad.

A Nablus-based branch of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the first bombing. They named the attacker as Khamis Jerwan.

Both bombers were residents of Nablus' Askar refugee camp, where an Israeli army raid on a suspected bomb factory turned into a firefight which left four Palestinians and an Israeli soldier dead last Friday.

In their statements, the groups the two militants belonged to said the suicide bombings were in retaliation for that raid.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has responded to the attacks by delaying the release of dozens of Palestinian prisoners.

Mr Sharon said a 'complete halt to terror' is needed if the Middle East peace process is to make any progress.
