Carrickmines landowner in Mahon evidence

The owner of lands at Carrickmines has told the Mahon Tribunal how he went ahead with a sale to businessman Jim Kennedy despite making allegations of corruption against him.

Mr Bob Tracey had told gardaí in 1989 that Mr Kennedy and his agent, Sam Stanley, had told him that bribes of £50,000 would have to be paid to get the Co Dublin land rezoned.

But Mr Tracey said he felt he could not get out of a contract with Mr Kennedy because he had signed a note giving Mr Stanley sole authority to sell the lands.

The sale price was increased after litigation from £540,000 to £700,000, with a closing date for March 1991.

A month before the closing date, Mr Tracey received a way-leave notice from the council to put a foul sewer through his lands.

Mr Tracey told the tribunal he had no knowledge of this plan. He also said that there was no suggestion during the negotiations that Mr Kennedy was a middle man for a foreign company.
