Gardaí in Cork City are continuing their investigation into the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl last night.

The teenager and her 17-year-old female friend claim they were set upon by up to eight teenagers as they walked along Little Hanover Street in the city centre.

But sources now indicate that the alleged rape may have taken place at a different location.

The two girls had just left a city centre gaming arcade where they been playing bowling at around 10.15pm last night.

One of the two, who is aged 17, had her handbag stolen by two teenage girls.

She ran after the two to try to retrieve her bag and the 13-year-old was assaulted by a number of the remaining teenagers and allegedly raped while she was on her own.

She was taken to the nearby Mercy Hospital where she is being treated.

Gardaí have sealed off the area and a full technical examination of the scene took place this morning.
