Soham murder trial enters final stages

Ian Huntley's lawyer has conceded there is evidence his client is guilty of the manslaughter of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

In his closing speech to the jury at the Soham murder trial at the Old Bailey in London, Stephen Coward said that the 29-year-old school caretaker was clearly worthy of punishment.

Earlier, counsel for Ian Huntley's defence told the jury that, for many out there who had not heard the evidence, their task was simple - to lock him up and throw away the key.

He said the public were 'baying at the door'. He said it was their job to resist those pressures.

Mr Huntley, a former caretaker at Soham Village College, denies the murders of the 10-year-old schoolgirls in August 2002, but he admits a single charge of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

Mr Huntley's ex-girlfriend, Maxine Carr, has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and two counts of assisting an offender.

The jury are expected to begin considering their verdict on Friday.
