Irish woman wins Miss World contest

Rosanna Davison, who has been crowned the first Irish Miss World, has said she will put all her energy into her new role.

Rosanna won the contest this afternoon in China, which hosted the pageant for the first time.

The 19 year old, who was the bookie's favourite to win the title, is the daughter of singer Chris De Burgh.

President Mary McAleese has said that she is delighted to hear of Rosanna's success and says that she is looking forward to personally congratulating her on her return to Ireland.

The Miss World organisers say that the event captures a worldwide television audience of around 2bn people, putting it on a par with the Olympic games' opening ceremony and football's World Cup.
