At the Soham murder trial in London, Ian Huntley has admitted under cross-examination that he killed Jessica Chapman.
She is one of the two ten-year-old schoolgirls he denies murdering.
In the witness box at the Old Bailey, the 29-year-old school caretaker was challenged on his account of how Holly Wells and Jessica died in the bathroom of his house.
Mr Huntley claims Holly drowned when she slipped into the bath while he was treating her nosebleed and that he smothered Jessica as she screamed and panicked.
But today counsel for the prosecution, Richard Latham QC, suggested Mr Huntley had lured the girls into his house and had drowned Holly before turning his attention to Jessica.
He still denies murdering either girl but he did admit killing Jessica by starving her of oxygen.
Mr Huntley also agreed that his behaviour in the days following the girls' deaths was designed as a cover up and was inexcusable.
He continues his evidence tomorrow.
