Soham trial hears of previous rape charge

The jury in the trial of Ian Huntley has heard that the former school caretaker was charged with rape five years ago.

Huntley is accused of the murder of Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in August 2002.

In a statement read out to the Old Bailey in London, Huntley's ex-girlfriend Maxine Carr says she initially told police she was at home with him when the girls disappeared because he had been charged with raping 'a girl' in 1998.

Carr says the case went to court and he was acquitted, but he had a nervous breakdown afterwards.

Huntley denies murdering the girls last year, but admits conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

Carr denies the conspiracy charge.
