Al-Qaeda suspect remanded in custody

An Algerian man has been remanded in custody by a court in Belfast after being arrested by police investigating al-Qaeda terrorist activities.

Abbas Boutrab, who is 25, was detained last week at Maghaberry Prison in Co Antrim.

He had been held there for six months for allegedly breaking immigration laws.

He is accused of receiving instructions or training in the making or use of explosives.

He was also charged with possessing floppy discs, CD-ROMS and a number of false identities in suspicious circumstances.

Mr Boutrab's solicitor said he would be vigorously denying the charges.
