Replica Famine ship back in Fenit

The replica Famine ship 'Jeanie Johnston' has arrived back at Fenit after her 12,000 mile voyage to North America.

She left Fenit last February and her last port of call was in Newfoundland.

In the past few days she had to make her way through three severe gales with winds of over 50 mph and waves high in excess of 30 feet as she headed back to Fenit.

Captain Tom McCarthy, who commanded the ship, said he was delighted that she was back safe and sound and with everybody aboard safe.

He said the last few days had been exceptionally difficult but the ship had proven its worth and was a tribute to those in Kerry who built her.

Captain McCarthy said the seafarers had now done their job and it was up to those who financed the ship to decide on her future, but that they must be clear that it has proven of huge value to Ireland abroad.

A number of proposals are being considered by the Jeanie Johnston project committee.
