Garda roads operation launched

A Garda operation to detect drink drivers, speeders and those who do not wear seatbelts will come into effect at midnight tonight and will be maintained over the bank holiday weekend.

Chief Superintendent Denis Fitzpatrick has warned that people who persist in committing these offences will be caught, fined, receive penalty points and, where appropriate, lose their licence.

The National Safety Council has said that six people were killed in fatal crashes over the October Bank Holiday last year.
