China's first space mission a success

A Chinese spacecraft is on its return to earth after a successful mission to put a man into orbit.

The Shenzhou V spacecraft lifted-off from the launch site in the Gobi desert around 2am, to propel China into an elite club of space-faring nations with the United States and Russia.

On board was a 38-year-old astronaut, Lieutenant Colonel Yang Liwei.

By 5pm, the capsule had completed 11 of the 14 orbits of the earth needed to complete the voyage.

The craft is expected to land shortly in central Mongolia.
